Social skills groups are designed to provide children and adolescents with social skill deficits an opportunity to learn, practice, and generalize skills that will aid them in building and maintaining meaningful relationships with peers. Social groups teach essential friendship making skills such as the ability to initiate conversations, join in groups, and compromise with peers. An emphasis is also placed on teaching children social thinking and perspective taking skills, including the ability to understand that other people have thoughts about them, their behavior affects others, and they can adapt their behavior to match their surroundings.

Teaching emphasized on the following:

  • Teaching the target the skill and checking for understanding
  • Role-playing
  • Naturalistic opportunities

Group Structure

  • 60 minute groups with 30 minute parent consultations
  • 12 sessions total per cycle
  • Run throughout the year

Parent Education

  • Receive feedback on your child’s progress after each session
  • Generalization homework passed out and reviewed
  • How to implement target skill outside of sessions

“ I hope this finds you well. I am the mother of one of the teens attending teen social skills group on Saturdays. I am very pleased with my the Social Skills Facilitators services and their attention to my son’s needs. They both have shown professionalism and adequate approach during the sessions. They have provided positive input and recommendations to encourage positive social behavior. My son looks forward to spending that hour among the group, they make it enjoyable for them. The program is very positive and helpful. He has been able to establish nice friendships while assisting this group. “

Social groups begin with a comprehensive assessment which includes a parent interview, review of records, client observation and interactions, and a report. Based on the assessment, children are placed in targeted groups to meet their unique individual needs.
